Can Energy Healers Talk About Science? What Practitioners Should Know

✏️Editor’s Note:
Should energy healers talk about science when explaining their work to clients?

And if you do reference research, the biofield, or scientific language, how can you do it without making claims that could create risk?

As interest in energy healing continues to grow, more practitioners are encountering questions about research, validation, and how their work connects to emerging scientific discussions about the human biofield. Navigating this conversation carefully is important for both credibility and professional safety.

In the article below, we’ll explore the growing conversation around science and energy healing, offering guidance on how practitioners can discuss research responsibly, communicate clearly with clients, and avoid language that could create liability concerns.

Why Energy Healers Are Starting to Use Scientific LanguageWhere do you stand on the science of what you do as an energy healer? Do you feel the need for research with tangible results? Are you affected by the debates behind research, or is belief enough?

“I can tell you that anything that happens in the physical body will happen in the patterns of the energy field first.”
– Barbara Brennan.

We are caught in a world that is clamoring with noise about holistic, wellness, and alternative medicine. And for years, mainstream medicine has done little more than remind everyone that there’s no proof that energy or holistic healing is real.

The landscape is beginning to shift on at least two fronts….

First, because the global public is recognizing the value of energy and holistic healing, and second, because mainstream medicine is listening to that public and at the same time embracing more scientific research on the biofield – the proven energy field of the body.

“Science is now helping us emerge from the cultural trance that has us believe we are just our physical bodies and there is nothing beyond the physical senses. Scientific breakthroughs are confirming what ancient spiritual teachers have been saying for thousands of years.”
– Dr. Kate De Jong.

Why Energy Healers Are Starting to Use Scientific Language (1)Why Energy Healers Are Starting to Use Scientific Language

According to Palo Alto University, “To support their work in 2026, energy healers should consider moving beyond purely mystical language and adopt a framework that bridges holistic traditions with biofield science, neuroscience, biometric validation, and complementary integration.”1

One of our industry’s leading organizations, the Association for Comprehensive Energy Psychology, describes it as "The aura meets AI," and explains: "The aura, or its scientific name, the biofield, interacts with its surroundings. It brings information into and out from the body. It moves invisibly and nearly immediately through organs, energy centers, and combines with consciousness. It is dynamic. The biofield changes, grows, shrinks, and morphs depending on shifting physical and emotional states. It communicates with the chakras, or energy centers of the body."2

Can Energy Healers Talk About Science What Practitioners Should KnowThe Risks of Making Scientific Claims in Energy Healing

For an energy practitioner, the scientific aspect is probably not what attracted you to energy healing, and not what keeps you here. For us, there’s always been a danger of making claims when drawing on scientific research – particularly when mixing in medical terms such as cure, treat, heal, prevent, etc.

Even worse is using those terms in relation to your clientele; even if a client claims their pain is gone, we can’t prove what caused that outcome. We’ve learned that every person is different and may have a different outcome from sessions with us. Therefore, for the practitioner, it’s a safe practice to avoid claims that need scientific proof.

But, if you’re a practitioner who likes science ‘speak,’ what do you do?

Can Energy Healers Talk About Science What Practitioners Should Know-1Simple Ways to Introduce Scientific Language in Energy Healing

Put your toe in the water, but don’t try to swim in the deep end until you’re thoroughly immersed in the right language. Educators give us some great examples of what they feel energy healers may to be able to say about science to support their work in 2026 and beyond.

These examples build from language we are already comfortable with - to more ‘scientific’ views:

  • Saffron and Sage3 suggest acknowledging the client’s autonomy rather than claiming to ‘cure’ them: “Energy healing serves as a catalyst for the body to heal itself, supporting the return to balance and homeostasis.”
I am facilitating your body’s natural healing.

  • ACEP suggests a scientific shift from vague ‘energy’ to measurable biophysical terms, with this example:
I assist in balancing the human biofield (or human energy field), which research now recognizes as a complex, data-managing system that communicates with the physical body.

  • Saffron & Sage also gives a deeper ‘scientific’ example.
“Research shows that energy therapies like Reiki and Tai Chi/Qi Gong can improve pain management, enhance immune function, and reduce anxiety.” They say the language shift is in “using data-driven, client-centered, and measurable outcomes. These measurable outcomes include biofeedback tools to show clients their physiological markers, such as stress levels or heart rate variability.”

  • And finally, Donna Eden reminds us “while many forms of energy we work with cannot be easily measured by current conventional tools, they are nonetheless effective in bringing about measurable physical healing.

💡Before promising outcomes or repeating client success stories, it’s important to understand where supportive language can become a risky claim. Read Can Energy Healers Promise Results? What You Can (and Can’t) Say to learn how to communicate safely with clients.

Can Energy Healers Talk About Science What Practitioners Should Know-2Using Devices and Tools Safely in Your Energy Healing Practice

Our natural tendency as energy healers is to be responsible and transparent, but to address liability risk, I advise caution, particularly when introducing tools or devices.

First, communicate to your client the use of the tool or device, and exactly what to expect.

Second, be sure your professional liability insurer is not only aware of what tools you’re using but has approved them for - rather than excluded them from - your coverage.

No professional liability insurance covers product functionality; that’s the responsibility of the product manufacturer and their product insurance – but practitioners must have the training, certification, and proper coverage to use tools and/or devices safely in their practice.

💡Introducing tools or devices into your practice can expand what you offer—but it also raises important questions about responsibility and coverage. Read Does Liability Insurance Cover Your Tools and Equipment? to understand how insurance applies when devices become part of your work.

Can Energy Healers Talk About Science What Practitioners Should Know-3Learning the Language of Biofield Science

Communicating ‘science’ for many practitioners might be a different and new language. I recommend selecting a few trusted, credible sources that will introduce you to the language and allow you to become familiar and comfortable with the terms around the biofield and its research.

While there are hundreds of websites, social sites, and conversations, these are credible and targeted resources where you can confidently gain experience and comfort with energy science:

  • CHI – Consciousness & Healing Initiative – a leading scientific collaborative that gathers experts to advance the study of biofield and subtle energy healing. Many of us know and revere CHI contributors as pillars of our community.
  • Biofield Fellowship – Supports high-quality research from emerging and established researchers.
  • NIH – National Institute of Health provides peer-reviewed studies, including scoping reviews on the biofield therapies clinical research landscape.
  • Nova Institute for Health – focuses on holistic health, conducting research on biofield science as a new, transdisciplinary field.

Of course, you can find a conversation about research almost anywhere, but since the science and research angle of energy healing isn’t what we do, it’s a safe practice to stick to a few well-recognized resources to support our science ‘speak.’

We can’t be experts, and it’s not our job to interpret biofield science to our clientele, so stick to the facts these experts can provide, and use them as bookmarks you can refer to clients who have a desire to learn more.

“Science is the only arbiter of truth, is not itself a scientific finding, but rather a philosophical belief.” – Often attributed to Timothy James Keller.

Can Energy Healers Talk About Science What Practitioners Should Know-4What’s Next: Balancing Science and Belief in Energy Healing

After all the uproar of research and AI finding its way into energy healing, is it really our job to delve into the science? Not necessarily.
Do your clients come to you for a science lesson? No.
Do they already believe in what you do? Probably.

Almost everyone acknowledges good and bad energy, and likely doesn’t want to know all the nuances of energy manipulation and balance. If your practice is strong and successful, don’t fix what isn’t broken. If you like the idea of adding some science ‘speak’ to your language portfolio, I hope this helps.

Like all your language choices, use safe practices. Never make claims or use medical language in terms of what you do. Even if you offer supplemental products, don’t promote their claims, either.

If you’re using research, be clear that the claim is authored by the research, not you.

Don’t allow clients to make claims about your services. Saying you cured their pain or headaches is an invitation from your state medical board asking if you’re practicing medicine without a license.

Using science to explain the biofield in new terms can be refreshing, intriguing, and a great tool for the right clientele, but it’s not for everybody. The love and light you bring to your authentic healing modalities may be all you ever need.

“Everything is energy, and that is all there is to it. Match the frequencies of the reality you want, and you cannot help but get that reality.” – Albert Einstein.

✏️Editor’s Note:
As conversations around biofield science and holistic healing continue to grow, practitioners may feel increasing pressure to explain their work using scientific language.

However, as this article highlights, the key is balance. Energy healers may reference research, discuss emerging science, and communicate the concepts behind their work—while still avoiding medical claims or statements that could create risk for their practice.

If you're exploring how to protect your practice while communicating clearly with clients, a helpful next step is reviewing EMPA’s Buyer’s Guide, which explains common liability risks for energy healers and how the right coverage can help safeguard your work.
