Contrary to popular belief – no.
Many energy and holistic practitioners who work from home and have either vague – or confused – ideas of how their homeowner’s insurance covers work-related activities or equipment and supplies.
Some may even assume their homeowner’s or renter’s insurance covers everything.
Unfortunately, this is a very common (and risky) misconception that we often see here at EMPA.
In this article, we’ll explain what your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance actually covers—and what it doesn’t—when it comes to seeing clients at home.
You’ll learn the difference between professional and general liability, why assuming you’re protected can put your practice at risk, and what kind of coverage energy healers need to work safely from home.
What Homeowner’s Insurance Does & Doesn’t Cover When You Work from Home+
Let's begin with what might be covered.
If you work from home and the only equipment you use is a personal computer, then your homeowner’s insurance will most likely replace it if stolen or damaged.
However, if a computer is stolen and along with that goes private client information…homeowner’s insurance will not offer any liability coverage for the data breach.
Let’s take a look at what else is likely not covered.
- If clients come to your home for a session, and one day someone slips on the ice by the front door – your homeowner’s insurance liability doesn't cover accidents to clients when a business is being run out of a home.
- Say you have special equipment for your energy work (furniture or supplies), and they are lost in a fire in your home. Your homeowner’s insurance generally won’t replace them because they are work related; similar to the example above.
The reason is simple.
Homeowner’s insurance is based on historic risk (weather/accidents) and the average cost of the contents of a home - like TV’s, refrigerator, clothes, etc.
It is not meant for specialized, expensive furniture – like a massage table or other supplies.
While risk is considered for the occasional friend to stop by, it doesn’t allow for higher traffic in and out of the home if it’s being used for business clients.
The same is true of renter’s insurance if your business is in an apartment or condo that is also your home.
So how am I covered?
Let’s break down the two types of insurance that most energy healers truly need.
💡Most new energy healers are focused on learning techniques and helping others—but there's one crucial area they often forget to protect. It’s simple, often overlooked, and could make all the difference in your long-term success. Read the blog to find out what it is →
#1: Why Energy Healers Need Professional Liability Insurance
Once you enter a chosen profession, whether a doctor, carpenter, dog walker or energy healer, you need insurance that protects you from things that happen in the process of doing your job.
For energy healers, that means insurance that will cover the action of providing your services to your clients.
This is called professional liability insurance.
It has lots of other names: for example doctors have medical malpractice insurance. Insurance agents have another version called errors and omissions.
The cost and scope varies greatly based on the occupation, after all, it makes sense that the risk of doing surgery is far greater than a Healing Touch session! – and that’s reflected in the type and cost of professional liability insurance.
💡Not sure what type of insurance you actually need as an energy healer? Understanding the difference between E&O, malpractice, and professional liability coverage can feel overwhelming—but it doesn’t have to be. This guide breaks it down so you can choose the right protection →
Professional liability insurance designed for energy healers covers you while delivering your services to your clients no matter where you work – at a home you own or rent, at your clients’ home, a rented office space, or an event.
If you have more than one job it’s probable that you are going to have more than one professional liability policy.
For example, if you are a nurse who also practices energy medicine, you would carry medical malpractice insurance for your licensed healthcare actions, and professional liability for energy work.

#2: Why Energy Healers Need General Liability Insurance
General liability is somewhat the same no matter what occupation you have: your client may get injured by something in your workspace.
If you use an essence oil on your client while giving a session and they are injured, or they have an allergic reaction – that’s a client injury covered by general liability.
It’s nicknamed ‘slip and fall’ since that’s also a common client injury.
General liability typically covers these types of client injuries at an office or at home. It is called ‘general’ because these types of injuries are common across occupations; a carpenter’s client could trip over a hammer on the floor as easily as your client can trip over a rug.
Can You Combine Professional and General Liability Insurance?
Yes—and in fact, most energy healing professionals do.
The great news is that organizations that specialize in coverage for energy healers and holistic practitioners often bundle professional and general liability into a single policy.
That means you get the core protections your business needs in one place.
For most energy healers, professional and general liability insurance is the core of what you need to practice safely and confidently.
