Energy Healers: 5 Insurance Gaps That Could Leave Your Practice Unprotected

One of the first things we learn as we near adulthood is that insurance is going to be part of our lives – often, car insurance is our first experience.

Then, once we have our own place, we experience renter’s or homeowner’s insurance to protect our living space from fire and natural disasters, ensuring our items are protected from theft and damage, too.

And of course, we hope we all have health insurance to pay those doctor’s bills!

So, it’s no surprise that when we become professional energy healers that there’s insurance involved.

But…what kind?

What does it cover? Are there gaps in coverage? How does it all get broken down in a way that I can understand?

In this article, we’ll break down the four types of coverage for energy healers and reveal common gaps that could be overlooked.

Energy Healers 5 Insurance Gaps That Could Leave Your Practice Unprotected (1)Gap #1: You’re Only Covered for What You Do, Not What Happens Around You

Professional liability covers you while providing services—like energy healing sessions or workshops.

On the other hand, if someone slips and falls during a session or has an allergic reaction to a product you used, you need general liability insurance to help.

When combined, these form the base of your coverage needs. We have worked with thousands of energy and holistic practitioners; for most, professional and general liability satisfies the insurance needs of an energy practice.

Bridge the Gap: Check and see if your insurance includes both professional and general liability. These are often bundled together, but not all professional liability policies are the same, so it’s best to consider a provider that understands the nuance of energy medicine – like we do here at EMPA!

💡Most new energy healers are focused on learning techniques and helping others—but there's one crucial area they often forget to protect. It’s simple, often overlooked, and could make all the difference in your long-term success. Read the blog to find out what it is →

Energy Healers 5 Insurance Gaps That Could Leave Your Practice Unprotected (2)Gap #2: Your Homeowner’s or Renter’s Insurance Doesn’t Cover Client Injuries

This is a very common misconception. Standard homeowners insurance policies include personal liability which is designed to protect the homeowner if a third party (friend, family member or social guest) is injured on their property and the homeowner or renter is found legally responsible due to negligence.

Client injuries at the practitioners home are considered business-related and therefore generally excluded from personal insurance policies.

Bridge the Gap: To cover possible client injuries, your general liability coverage (as mentioned in the previous section) will help protect your practice. This includes protection for in-home client injuries that satisfies the needs for most energy healers who practice from home.

Energy Healers 5 Insurance Gaps That Could Leave Your Practice Unprotected (3)Gap #3: Your Equipment and Supplies Could be a Liability—Not Just an Asset

Most personal insurance policies also limit coverage for “business property.” That may include your massage table, sound bowls, crystals, or even client files.

Business property is typically not covered under homeowner’s or renter’s policies designed for apartments.

Bridge the Gap: If this applies to you, you may need to ask about Business Personal Property (BPP) insurance on top of your base coverage (professional and general liability) to cover your business belongings, no matter where you keep them; in a home or apartment, or rented office space.

Energy Healers 5 Insurance Gaps That Could Leave Your Practice Unprotected (4)Gap #4: If You Rent Office Space, Your Landlord’s Insurance Might Not Protect You

If something you do causes damage to your rented space—like a fire caused by a diffuser—you may be considered responsible. Don’t assume the building’s coverage will take care of it, be sure you understand if the landlord expects you to carry rental property coverage.

Some general liability policies have limited rental property coverage, but more and more insurance companies are expecting the landlord to carry sufficient coverage for their properties.

Bridge the Gap: Ask to see if your general liability policy includes coverage for rental property damage.

Energy Healers 5 Insurance Gaps That Could Leave Your Practice Unprotected (5)Gap #5: What To Do if You Make or Sell Products

If you make and sell your own oils, teas, sprays, or supplements—even on a small scale—you’re probably going to be held accountable if something goes wrong! Standard liability insurance does not cover products you manufacture. Sometimes even if you don’t make the product, but endorse and sell it, you can also be held responsible for those product claims.

Bridge the Gap: Consider if you need to purchase another policy such as product liability insurance, in addition to your primary policy (professional and general), for claims related to products you make or sell.
