📌 EMPA Short Take:
Practicing multiple healing modalities doesn’t necessarily mean paying more for professional and general liability insurance. With EMPA, the number of covered modalities you practice doesn’t change your cost. What’s critical is making sure every modality you offer is actually covered.
Does every new modality mean another increase in your insurance cost?
How can you tell whether every modality you offer is included in your coverage?
For many healers, learning doesn’t stop when you begin seeing clients. Your skills expand, your interests evolve, and the practice you have five years from now may look very different from the one you started with.
The encouraging news is that more modalities doesn’t often mean a higher professional liability insurance premium.
In this article, we’ll explain how insurance can work for a multi-modality healing practice, why checking your covered modalities is so important, and what to do when you add something new.
Does Practicing More Holistic Healing Modalities Mean Paying More For Insurance?
It depends on the insurance provider and how its coverage is structured.
With EMPA, you don’t pay more simply because you practice more covered modalities.
For example, if you practice Reiki, spiritual healing, and medical intuition, EMPA doesn't charge you once for Reiki, again for spiritual healing, and a third time for medical intuition simply because you offer three modalities.
That makes the number of modalities less important than another question: Does your professional and general liability policy cover everything you do?
This distinction can easily get overlooked. Having liability insurance for your healing practice does not mean that every service you offer automatically falls within that coverage.
How Do You Know If All Of Your Healing Modalities Are Covered?
Start by making a list of the professional services you currently provide. Then compare that list with the modalities your insurance provider says are covered.
Check each modality individually.
This is especially important when your work combines several approaches. It is a best practice not to assume one modality is included because it is similar to another one that appears on your insurer's list. If you can't find the modality you practice or aren't sure where it fits, ask your provider for clarification.
EMPA recently saw why this can be so important during a new-member meeting. One participant shared that she had previously carried insurance that covered some of her modalities, but later discovered that not all of her modalities (in this case, Medical Intuition) were listed as covered services.
She had insurance. The problem was that the coverage didn't reflect her work.
That's a useful distinction for any multi-modality practitioner to remember: I have insurance and all of my professional services are covered are two different things to verify.
What Does EMPA Cost For Multiple Healing Modalities?
Your annual membership and insurance cost is based on your protection level, not how many covered modalities you practice:
-
Essential Protection is $245/year
-
Professional Protection is $275/year
-
Premium Protection is $375/year
Whether you practice one modality or ten, the price for that protection level is the same.
Your total can increase if you choose additional protection or services, for example, our cyber protection costs $149/year.
Keep in mind, EMPA is a professional association, so your membership includes more than insurance coverage; members receive tailored education and valuable resources developed specifically for energy healing practitioners.
What If One Of Your Modalities Doesn’t Quality for Coverage?
Sometimes practitioners offer services that fall outside the scope of their coverage. That doesn’t mean they have to stop offering those services—it means it is important to make sure they have appropriate separate coverage for any professional activities that are not covered under the EMPA policy.
This becomes especially important when covered and non-covered services are combined within the same practice or session. A service that falls outside the scope of the policy does not “become covered” simply because it is offered alongside a covered modality.
Likewise, offering a non-covered service does not, by itself, mean that your otherwise-covered professional services are no longer covered.
Coverage is based on the activity giving rise to the claim and the terms and exclusions of the policy.
When covered and non-covered activities overlap, however, determining which coverage applies can become more complicated. This is why having appropriate coverage for all of the professional services you provide is so important.

What Should You Do When You Add A New Modality To Your Practice?
Your practice may not stay the same—and that's perfectly normal!
EMPA works specifically with energy healers, and we know multi-modality practices are quite common. You may take another training, become certified in something new, or discover a modality that complements the work you're already doing.
As you grow, build one simple step into that process:
Double check your insurance coverage.
Look for the modality on your provider's covered-services list. If it isn't there, ask!
You typically want to find out before you begin offering the new service whether it's covered or falls outside the coverage available to you.
What Should You Check When Buying Professional Liability Insurance for a Multi-Modality Healing Practice?
Take a look at the practice you're running and ask yourself:
- What modalities am I currently offering to clients?
- Is each one covered by my insurance?
- Are there different coverage requirements for any of my services?
- What is my provider's process if I add another modality?
- Who can I ask if I don't see my exact modality listed?
Think about professional liability insurance around your whole practice, rather than treating each modality like a separate little business. As your work evolves, your coverage should continue to reflect the professional services you're providing.

What’s Next? Keep Every Modality In Your Practice Covered
You may have started with one modality and gradually found your way to several. That growth is a natural part of many healing practices, and adding another covered modality doesn't have to mean another insurance charge.
With EMPA, the number of covered modalities you practice doesn't change your cost. The important step is knowing that each service you offer is included in your coverage.
Take a few minutes to look at your practice as it exists today. Make a list of what kind of healing work you offer your clients and compare it with your current coverage.
Finally, keep that habit with you as you grow: when you add a new modality, check your coverage before you begin offering it professionally. It’s a simple habit that lets your coverage keep pace with the healer (and the practice) you’re becoming.
Frequently Asked Questions

It depends on the provider, though typically, as long as the services you offer are listed on your policy, no. With EMPA, the number of covered modalities doesn’t change your price.
How Much Does EMPA Coverage Cost if I Have Multiple Modalities?
Annual pricing is $245 Essential, $275 Professional, or $375 Premium, depending on the protection level you need.
What If A Modality Is Not Covered?
If a modality or service is not covered, it falls outside the scope of the policy. You may still offer that service, but it is best to have appropriate separate coverage for professional activities that are not covered under your policy.
What If My Modality Isn’t Listed?
Not seeing your modality listed does not necessarily mean it isn't covered. Many services fall within broader covered categories. Coverage is based on what you actually do in your practice, not simply the name of your modality. If you're unsure where your services fit, contact us with a brief description of your services and training.
Should I Check My Coverage When I Add A New Modality?
Yes. Make a coverage check part of growing your practice.
